In 2017 a remarkable designer shop joined our block in Oxford Street Paddington - Krema House- just two doors from our gallery. And a remarkable young woman, Nihan Altuntas entered my world.
As you will know, I was a very late entrant into the world of galleries, after I had secured my financial future elsewhere. I came to profoundly admire those who, from the beginning, made their decision to live their passion for art and beauty. Representing artists was my way of saying thank you to those who lifted my world beyond the everyday.
Young gallerists and creative entrepreneurs similarly caught my breath. No more so than Nihan, who created her own wearable designs in yarn and began delving into the world of wearable ceramics. At the same time, she worked with young artists in her native Turkey bringing to Sydney contemporary design inspired by traditional Turkish materials and motifs. Nihan’s physical shop closed in 2019 , continuing to present her work online.
Now she has taken a short term lease here in Newtown to present her latest collection of ceramic and bead jewellery, as well as designer items from Turkish artists. The pop-up will also show a striking collection of earrings and neckpieces, in wood and silver, from one of our Gallery’s favourites - An Morison. if you have time, take a trip down the on the main drag in King St Newtown, and call in.
