DECO
As an artist and historian, Deborah Beck’s artwork is often informed by her research and writing. Her recent biography of the sculptor Rayner Hoff led her to explore Sydney’s art deco buildings, particularly their use of highly decorative panels which contrast dramatically with the simplified masses of the architecture on which they sit.
As well as images of the exteriors of the buildings, more intimate studies of art deco lighting and details of the interiors of Sydney’s iconic theatres and public buildings have been drawn and painted in Beck’s favoured mediums of gouache, collage and graphite.
